Bus drivers across Uganda are preparing to halt services next month in protest against what they describe as excessive costs and administrative hurdles for renewing their driving badges and undertaking mandatory annual refresher courses.

The United Bus Drivers Association (UBDA) issued a notice on October 8, stating that its members will “temporarily withdraw their driving services and park the buses they operate” starting Monday, October 21, 2026. This collective action is intended as a peaceful industrial protest.

The association highlighted that the increasing financial and administrative pressure related to the validity and renewal of driver badges, along with annual training requirements, has become untenable for its members. The UBDA indicated that the strike will continue until their concerns are meaningfully addressed and a resolution is reached.

This planned industrial action is expected to significantly disrupt public transportation services nationwide, affecting commuters and the broader economy. The UBDA has called for urgent dialogue with the relevant authorities to find a workable solution before the strike commences.
