A teacher at Karembe Primary School in Buhweju District, identified as Asaph Abenawe, has admitted to engaging in the sale of fake Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) papers. Abenawe confessed that he operated a private WhatsApp group where he marketed and sold these fraudulent examination materials, reportedly receiving Shs300,000 from individuals seeking what they believed were genuine papers.

Abenawe, who teaches at the government-aided Karembe Primary School, stated that he did not force anyone to purchase the materials, implying a degree of voluntary participation from the buyers. He also admitted to removing members from the WhatsApp group who questioned his activities or failed to meet his payment demands.

The headteacher of Karembe Primary School, Mr. John Nuwahereza, has distanced the institution from Abenawe’s alleged actions, emphasizing that the school was unaware of his illicit dealings. Nuwahereza clarified that Abenawe was a hired, licensed teacher brought in to address a shortage, not a permanently deployed government educator. He also highlighted broader challenges faced by the school, including infrastructure deficits.

UNEB officials apprehended Abenawe following a tip-off and reportedly transported him to Kampala. While police have yet to make an official statement, the incident underscores UNEB’s ongoing warnings to students and parents against falling for social media scams promising examination shortcuts. The examination body consistently advises candidates to focus on diligent preparation rather than seeking illicit means to pass.
