Steven Katabalwa, Director of Education at Arms Around Africa Foundation, has issued a crucial reminder to parents regarding the safety of their children during school breaks. He emphasized that increased vigilance is necessary to safeguard youngsters from the risks associated with unsupervised outings and excessive freedom.
Katabalwa’s appeal coincided with praise for Gilgal Primary School’s innovative approach to leadership development. The school has implemented a system of democratic elections for its student prefects, aiming to cultivate responsible and ethical leaders from a young age.
He urged parents to avoid granting children unrestricted liberty during holidays, stressing that proper guidance and supervision are paramount in protecting them from harm. Katabalwa also encouraged collaboration between parents, schools, and other community stakeholders to ensure children’s well-being and continued development.
Gilgal Primary School’s initiative involves pupils engaging in democratic campaigns for various leadership roles, followed by voting to elect their chosen representatives. This process provides practical experience in democratic principles such as campaigning, making informed decisions, and respecting election outcomes.
The school’s director, Harriet Sylvia Namasogo, stated that this program is integral to the institution’s mission to nurture leadership capabilities and instill an appreciation for democratic values. She believes that early exposure to such processes equips students with essential skills for their future academic and societal roles.
Namasogo confirmed that these prefect elections will be an annual event, reinforcing discipline, accountability, and integrity among the student body. The initiative serves as a vital complement to traditional academic learning, preparing students to be responsible citizens and effective future leaders.
