A recent police operation in Lwengo District has resulted in the arrest of nine suspects believed to be involved in motorcycle theft and the killing of boda boda riders. The crackdown, which targeted several villages including Namabaale, Lwoyo, Ndagwe, and Lwendawula, also led to the recovery of at least five stolen motorcycles.

Led by Lwengo District Police Commander Rodgers Cheben, the overnight operation focused on Ndagwe sub-county, identified as a base for the suspects who allegedly concealed stolen motorcycles before moving them to neighboring districts like Rakai and Kyotera. The arrested individuals, whose identities have been released, are currently detained as investigations proceed.

Southern Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the arrests and stated that police are actively pursuing other individuals connected to the criminal network. He urged the public to come forward with any information that could aid the ongoing investigations.

The arrests have been welcomed by local boda boda riders and residents who have expressed relief after living in fear due to the increased criminality. Dan Mwanje, a boda boda rider, shared the community’s suffering, highlighting the loss of colleagues and appealing for accountability to ensure safer working conditions.

Lwengo District Chairperson Abasi Kizito has called for enhanced night patrols and stronger collaboration between residents and security forces to combat the criminal elements terrorizing the community. Police have assured that operations will continue to ensure the restoration of security in Lwengo.

This crackdown follows a reported increase in motorcycle-related crimes across the greater Masaka area, indicating a broader challenge that authorities are working to address.
