Fuel-Saving Strategies Amidst Soaring Prices in Uganda
As fuel prices hit new highs in Uganda, experts are offering practical advice for motorists to conserve fuel, ranging from driving habits to vehicle maintenance. Source: https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/news/national/experts-share-fuel-saving-tips-as-prices-soar-5627148
Motorists in Uganda are facing significant financial pressure as fuel pump prices continue their upward trajectory. A litre of petrol is now trading between Shs6,700 and Shs6,900, with diesel reaching Shs7,018 in Kampala.
In response to the escalating costs, motor-vehicle experts have shared crucial tips to help drivers reduce fuel consumption and manage their expenses. Arthur Kisenyi, founder of For the Love of Cars Uganda, emphasized the importance of mindful driving. He advised against unnecessary speeding and aggressive overtaking, noting that such behaviors, while seemingly exhilarating, significantly drain fuel.
Kisenyi also pointed out that carrying extra weight, whether from passengers or luggage, increases fuel usage. “Whenever you add someone in your car, that’s a weight-load added,” he explained. Additionally, he suggested that drivers might need to reconsider using air conditioning, as it draws power directly from the fuel tank.
Mechanical maintenance is another key area highlighted by experts. Victor Ssenfuka, a mechanic specializing in Nissan vehicles, stressed the importance of regular checks on components like air cleaners. A clogged air cleaner can force the engine to work harder, leading to increased fuel consumption.
Driving with underinflated tires was also identified as a major contributor to high fuel usage. Proper tire pressure ensures optimal performance and efficiency.
Engineer James Kulubya highlighted the role of vehicle sensors. He explained that malfunctioning sensors can send incorrect information to the engine’s control unit, resulting in inefficient fuel burn. He also noted that some car sensors are sensitive to the vibrations common on Ugandan roads, potentially affecting their performance and, consequently, fuel economy.
These insights come as the government acknowledges the global nature of the fuel price crisis, with President Museveni advising frugality while solutions are sought. The advice from these experts offers immediate, actionable steps for Ugandan drivers to mitigate the impact of high fuel costs.
