Deputy Chief Justice Moses Kawumi Kazibwe has voiced his strong disapproval of drawn-out and repetitive speeches often heard at wedding ceremonies. He stated that such lackluster communication makes him lose interest in attending these functions, suggesting he would rather be seen as impolite than endure endless advice.
Speaking at the launch of a public speaking guide, “Voice Command: A 3-Step Guide to Public Speaking Mastery for Africans,” Kazibwe critiqued speakers who recycle familiar marriage advice, often mirroring discussions that should have occurred during traditional ceremonies. He emphasized the importance of tailoring messages to the specific occasion and keeping them concise and to the point.
Kazibwe shared that he often resorts to reading novels at church rather than listening to speeches that drag on, especially when guests are hungry. He also lamented that many valuable African ideas and innovations are lost because their creators fail to communicate them effectively.
“Africa does not lack ideas. Africa does not lack talent; Africa does not lack stories. What is often missing is not only the confidence or an opportunity to speak,” Kazibwe remarked, urging Africans to actively share their narratives and innovations.
The author of the book, public-speaking coach Apuuli Babigumira, noted that his guide aims to help individuals, particularly Africans who may struggle with confidence due to language or educational background, overcome the fear of public speaking. The book offers practical techniques for structuring messages, delivering with confidence, and making memorable presentations.
