Uringi Senior Secondary School, a cornerstone of education in Nebbi District, is preparing to celebrate 58 years since its establishment in 1968. Founded by the late Silvanus W. Uringi, a former Deputy Minister for Health, the school began as a community effort under the Anglican Diocese of Nebbi to bring secondary education to the West Nile sub-region.
Now one of the oldest secondary schools in the area, Uringi SS is celebrating under the theme “Investing in Academic Excellence.” This theme is particularly relevant as the school, like many founded in rural areas, grapples with challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and the need to bolster academic performance.
The anniversary serves as more than just a commemoration of history; it’s a renewed appeal to its former students, the Church, and governmental bodies to contribute to enhancing the quality of education offered. Organizers emphasized the school’s significant role in producing accomplished professionals, including doctors, lawyers, and academics.
Elly Aswa, chairperson of the organizing committee, highlighted the founder’s foresight in prioritizing education. “For the minister to invest in education, it was a very good vision,” Aswa stated, urging the community and stakeholders to invest in the school’s future.
Alumni, like Nebbi Municipality Mayor Jackline Upar, have expressed gratitude for the foundational role the school played in their lives. Upar, who recalled writing the school’s anthem as a student, emphasized the lasting impact of her education there.
Originally a private institution, Uringi SS became government-aided in 1981 and has since grown into a day and boarding school offering both Ordinary and Advanced Level education. The school currently serves 632 students under the leadership of Headteacher Kennedy Paul Picho.
Notable alumni include Professor George Ladaah Openjuru, Vice Chancellor of Gulu University, and Bishop Rev Pons Ozelle Awinju of the Nebbi Anglican Diocese, underscoring the school’s success as a ‘factory of leaders.’ As it marks this milestone, Uringi SS aims to mobilize support to build upon its founder’s vision and ensure continued opportunities for future generations.
