As Uganda gears up to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time, the hospitality industry is being mobilized to provide a memorable experience for international visitors. The Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association has initiated discussions with hotel general managers and restaurant owners, emphasizing the importance of showcasing Ugandan culinary heritage.
Susan Muhwezi, President of the Association, highlighted the need for organized presentation and appropriate portion sizes for local dishes. The focus is on ensuring all food served meets stringent safety standards to prevent any health concerns among guests. This proactive approach aims to leave a lasting positive impression of Uganda’s organic food offerings.
Discussions are also underway regarding the potential establishment of a dedicated restaurant in Kololo, specializing exclusively in Ugandan staples such as ‘luwombo’. There are considerations for government support to facilitate training programs, enabling local hotel managers to equip other hosting facilities with the necessary skills.
Consultants like Paul Aloni Kireta are advising the sector on how to capitalize on the tournament, not just by providing accommodation but also by offering unique experiences. This includes encouraging hotels to prepare for times when players and visitors might wish to explore local attractions and sample regional food.
Key requirements for businesses looking to supply goods or services for AFCON include registration with the Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association, up-to-date tax payments to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), and a valid trading license from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). KCCA is also in talks with the AFCON organizing committee to address the role of local eateries.
Uganda’s local food is renowned for its freshness and organic qualities, offering a diverse range of dishes that are increasingly being recognized globally for their taste and even potential health benefits.
