Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has highlighted the potential for Uganda to draw valuable lessons from The Bahamas’ thriving tourism sector, particularly in areas of luxury tourism, destination marketing, and hospitality standards. These remarks were made following the presentation of credentials by his wife, Anita Rukundo Tayebwa, as the newly appointed Honorary Consul of The Bahamas to Uganda.
Tayebwa emphasized that The Bahamas’ experience in attracting high-spending international tourists presents a significant opportunity for Uganda to enhance its own tourism industry. He noted that The Bahamas is a unique destination renowned for attracting ultra-wealthy visitors, a model that Uganda can adapt to boost its local tourism sector and increase earnings.
Mrs. Tayebwa, who chose to represent The Bahamas due to its global standing in luxury tourism, has pledged to foster stronger ties between the two nations. Her focus will be on enhancing tourism promotion, facilitating exchange programs, and building partnerships among travel agencies, airlines, tour operators, and tourism authorities.
This burgeoning relationship is expected to open doors for Ugandan tourism businesses to exchange expertise, explore collaborative ventures, and develop joint promotional activities. Tourism investor Amos Wekesa suggested that this cooperation could also lead to the unlocking of Uganda’s water bodies, such as Lake Victoria, for tourism development.
The appointment of honorary consuls like Mrs. Tayebwa is seen as a crucial step in strengthening business links and fostering cooperation across tourism, trade, and people-to-people relations. Uganda aims to elevate its tourism earnings through improved international marketing, enhanced hospitality services, and attracting a higher caliber of visitors, with The Bahamas offering a proven blueprint for success in destination branding and visitor experience.
