Anita Rukundo Tayebwa, the recently appointed Honorary Consul of The Bahamas to Uganda, has articulated a clear vision to enhance tourism collaboration between the two countries. Following the presentation of her letters of credence to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Amb. Adonia Ayebare, Rukundo emphasized the potential for Uganda to learn from The Bahamas’ successful tourism model.

Despite its smaller size, The Bahamas has achieved remarkable success in attracting international visitors and generating substantial tourism revenue. In 2025, The Bahamas welcomed over 12 million visitors, generating approximately $5.27 billion, significantly outperforming Uganda’s 1.6 million visitors and $1.62 billion in receipts during the same period.

Rukundo highlighted destination marketing, hospitality development, visitor experience management, and international investment as key areas where Uganda could benefit from The Bahamas’ experience. Her office plans to facilitate partnerships and knowledge exchange, aiming to bridge the gap between the two nations and attract more tourists to Uganda.

Furthermore, Rukundo intends to support Ugandan tour operators in creating complementary tourism packages that showcase the unique attractions of both countries. This will involve fostering connections between tourism industry stakeholders and government agencies in both Uganda and The Bahamas.

Minister Ayebare expressed high expectations for Rukundo’s role, stating that Uganda anticipates significant benefits from her representation and the implementation of best practices learned from The Bahamas. Tourism investor Amos Wekesa suggested focusing on developing Uganda’s water bodies, like Lake Victoria, to further enhance revenue potential.
