Uganda is stepping up efforts to boost its tourism sector through enhanced international cooperation. The Uganda High Commission in Dar es Salaam recently organized a significant tourism roadshow in Maputo, Mozambique, on October 8th, 2026. The primary goal was to spotlight Uganda’s diverse tourism offerings and cultivate stronger business ties with Mozambique.

Retired Colonel Fred Mwesigye, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Mozambique, presented the country’s unique attractions, including its renowned mountain gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, rich cultural heritage, and adventure tourism opportunities. He emphasized the potential for both nations to leverage their bilateral relationships for increased tourism investment, joint marketing initiatives, and a greater influx of visitors.

The event saw a positive response from Mozambique, with Telma Sono of the Mozambique National Institute for Tourism (INATUR) highlighting the importance of robust cooperation, private sector engagement, and knowledge sharing in the tourism industry.

A landmark achievement of the roadshow was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO) and the Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators of Mozambique (AVITUM). This agreement lays the groundwork for collaborative tourism promotion, the development of joint business ventures, and the creation of multi-destination travel packages designed to encourage exploration of both countries.

Furthermore, the roadshow facilitated approximately 100 virtual business-to-business meetings, directly connecting Ugandan and Mozambican tourism professionals. These interactions aimed to establish direct commercial partnerships and explore strategies for increasing tourist numbers between the two nations.

This initiative is a crucial part of Uganda’s economic diplomacy strategy, seeking to position the country as a premier tourist destination, diversify its source markets, and translate international partnerships into concrete economic benefits, thereby boosting visitor arrivals and business growth.
