Two cherished paintings by French Impressionist artist Auguste Renoir have been recovered after being stolen from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, a town in the south of France where the artist spent his final years. The artworks, “Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano” (1910) and “Jeune fille au puits” (1886), were taken on September 8th.

Thieves reportedly gained access by cutting through a fence and smashing a window. Inside the museum, they used an electric saw to remove the paintings from their frames. While the thieves initially made off with four pieces, they dropped two in the museum’s garden during their escape.

The recovery has brought immense joy and relief to the local community. Mayor Bryan Masson emphasized the significance of these paintings, stating they represent “part of our city’s history, our cultural heritage and the legacy Auguste Renoir left to Cagnes-sur-Mer.”

Authorities have also arrested six individuals in connection with the theft. This incident highlights a concerning trend of high-profile art heists across Europe. The Renoir Museum, which houses 12 of the artist’s works and personal artifacts, was opened in 1960.

This recovery follows other recent art thefts, including the recovery of Renoir, Cézanne, and Matisse paintings stolen near Parma, Italy, earlier this year. It also brings to mind the audacious theft of crown jewels from the Louvre in Paris last October.

Further details regarding the recovery are expected to be released soon.
