Anita Rukundo Tayebwa, Uganda’s newly appointed Honorary Consul to The Bahamas, has outlined her vision to bolster the tourism sectors of both nations. Following the presentation of her credentials in Kampala, Rukundo expressed her commitment to forging stronger links that will benefit Uganda’s tourism industry.

She pointed to The Bahamas’ remarkable success in attracting millions of international visitors and generating substantial tourism revenue, despite its smaller size compared to Uganda. In 2025, The Bahamas welcomed over 12 million visitors and earned approximately $5.27 billion, significantly more than Uganda’s 1.6 million visitors and $1.62 billion in the same period.

Rukundo emphasized that this disparity underscores the need for Uganda to enhance its international marketing strategies and adopt best practices from countries with established tourism sectors. Her office plans to focus on destination marketing, hospitality development, visitor experience management, and attracting international investment.

“We hope to bridge the gap between The Bahamas and Uganda. We hope to promote tourism… With this relationship, we hope to attract more people to come and visit Uganda,” Rukundo stated. She also envisions facilitating complementary tourism packages and fostering partnerships between the private sectors of both countries.

Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Adonia Ayebare welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence that Rukundo’s role would significantly benefit Uganda’s tourism ambitions. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa also lauded his wife’s appointment, acknowledging her capabilities in driving business and diplomatic initiatives.

Tourism stakeholders, including investor Amos Wekesa, have suggested that Rukundo’s efforts could also help unlock Uganda’s potential in water-based tourism. The proposed collaboration is expected to concentrate on promotional activities, private sector engagement, and expertise exchange to expand Uganda’s visitor base and increase tourism revenue.
