President Yoweri Museveni has urged Ugandans to actively participate in nation-building through diligent work and the multiplication of their talents, asserting that this responsibility is deeply rooted in biblical teachings. Speaking as the chief guest at the 28th Uganda National Prayer Breakfast, held at State House Entebbe on the eve of the nation’s 64th Independence anniversary, President Museveni stressed the importance of aligning spiritual devotion with socio-economic progress.

The President linked the theme, “Wake Up, Work Hard, Build Uganda,” to his personal experiences. He recalled opposing sectarian politics in the 1960s, emphasizing that hating individuals based on tribe or religion is akin to hating God’s creation. He also cited the Parable of the Talents as a divine directive for diligence and accountability, rejecting notions that Christians should passively rely on prayer while neglecting economic engagement.

First Lady Janet Museveni delivered the closing prayer, offering a testimony of thanksgiving for the nation’s journey, key development projects, and her personal recovery. She expressed gratitude for divine guidance, Uganda’s successful response to the Ebola threat, and the development of its internal capacity to assist neighboring countries. Her prayer also touched upon the crude oil project and the need for sustainable water management for agricultural productivity.

Mrs. Museveni shared a personal reflection on her recent illness, expressing profound gratitude for life and the prayers of Ugandans. She described the prayer breakfast as particularly poignant, acknowledging the great mercy and grace she and her family had received.

The event, organized by Parliament, aims to foster dialogue and national unity, drawing parallels to its origins in the United States during times of conflict. Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Jacob Markson Oboth-Oboth, thanked President Museveni for hosting the annual gathering and acknowledged the First Lady’s spiritual contributions.
