Makerere University has officially appointed Sheikh Abdul-Karim Abdallah Katamba as its new Imam, with the role commencing on October 1, 2026. This significant appointment was the result of a competitive selection process, a collaboration between the university administration and the Office of the Mufti of Uganda.

The selection process involved the nomination of three qualified Muslim clerics by the Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje. These nominees, each holding a Master’s degree in Islamic theology and possessing relevant qualifications, underwent a thorough assessment and interview phase. Ultimately, Sheikh Katamba emerged as the most suitable candidate.

Sheikh Katamba brings a wealth of experience spanning over two decades in Islamic scholarship, teaching, and religious administration. His academic background includes a Master of Arts in Sharia-Islamic Law from the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) and a Bachelor of Arts in Hadith and Prophetic Traditions from the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia.

His career has seen him serve in various capacities, including lecturing in Islamic Studies at IUIU and heading Shuhada Secondary School. He also held administrative roles within the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), serving as head of the Halal Department and assistant to the Mufti for the Ankole-Kigezi region.

In his new role as Imam at Makerere University, Sheikh Katamba will be responsible for providing spiritual leadership and guidance to the university’s Muslim community, comprising students and staff. His duties will encompass overseeing Islamic religious activities and supporting the spiritual well-being of Muslims on campus.

This appointment highlights the cooperative efforts between Makerere University and the Office of the Mufti in ensuring qualified religious leadership for the institution’s Muslim population.
