An ICE agent discharged a firearm during a law enforcement operation in New York City’s Bronx borough on Thursday. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the event, stating the operation aimed to apprehend an individual with a criminal record. The individual sustained injuries but is reportedly alive and hospitalized.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the situation as “unconscionable and incredibly serious.” He indicated that early reports suggest ICE agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old child in his vehicle before firing multiple shots. The child is believed to have been unharmed.
Governor Kathy Hochul expressed “outrage on behalf of New Yorkers” after speaking with President Donald Trump about the incident. She requested the release of any body camera footage to clarify the facts. The DHS identified the man as a citizen of the Dominican Republic with prior convictions for grand larceny, assault, robbery, and weapons possession. He had been arrested in December 2023 and released shortly after.
Mamdani announced his intention to urge President Trump to halt ICE enforcement actions within the city, citing concerns about “terrorizing our communities.” New York City, a Democratic stronghold, has policies that limit its police officers’ involvement in federal immigration enforcement.
Protesters gathered at the scene, demanding “justice” and the removal of ICE from city streets. This incident follows other notable encounters involving ICE officers this year, including a fatal shooting in Minneapolis in January.
