Entebbe International Airport is set to streamline its car park operations with the introduction of a new system leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning. The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), in collaboration with local contractor Samanga Utilities Limited, has upgraded the parking infrastructure to tackle notorious traffic bottlenecks, particularly during peak travel times.
The revamped system utilizes entervo V3 software from German firm Scheidt & Bachmann, coupled with modern Gen 40 hybrid machines. This integration allows for both ticketed and ticketless access, aiming to create a smoother experience for airport users.
A key improvement is the enhanced license plate recognition (LPR) technology. Previous LPR systems struggled with obscured or damaged plates, often necessitating manual intervention. The new AI-driven system, however, is capable of reading even scratched or mud-covered plates, significantly reducing errors and expediting barrier operations.
“With the new system, which has AI features and machine learning capabilities, errors and number plate rejections have been drastically reduced,” stated Vianney Luggya, UCAA Manager of Public Affairs. “The system can easily read even a scratched or mud-covered number plate, allowing the barrier to open as the vehicle approaches.”
Payment processes have also been modernized. Exit points now feature automated validation, eliminating the need to insert payment cards. Digital payment channels have been expanded to include mobile money via the *227# USSD gateway, with plans for direct Visa payments and in-terminal QR code options. While tariff structures remain the same, a 2% integration fee applies to mobile money transactions.
For security and privacy, UCAA maintains custodian rights over all data, including vehicle registration records, timestamps, and payment logs, storing them in secure archives. Data is only shared with external entities, such as law enforcement, under formal statutory guidelines.
