Uganda has reached a significant milestone with 100 practicing psychiatrists, a development hailed by the Uganda Association of Psychiatrists (UAP) as crucial for enhancing mental health services. UAP President Dr. Emmanuel Kiiza Mwesiga highlighted this achievement against the backdrop of a continent-wide shortage, noting that Africa has only around 2,500 psychiatrists in total.
“For any country to reach 100 is a big deal,” Dr. Kiiza stated, pointing out that Uganda now has more psychiatrists than several neighboring countries. This increase is seen as a vital step for the Ministry of Health, which is working to improve mental health care delivery across the nation.
Dr. Hafsa Lukwata, Assistant Commissioner for Mental Health at the Ministry of Health, acknowledged the importance of the growing number of psychiatrists. She indicated that while the current number of psychiatrists could be adequate if all were within the public system, there remains a significant demand for other mental health professionals, including clinical psychologists, social workers, counselors, and occupational therapists.
Data from the Ministry of Health and UAP reveals that 14 psychiatrists are stationed at Butabika Hospital, with an additional seven serving in regional referral hospitals. The government plans to recruit approximately 28 more mental health professionals in the current financial year.
Despite this progress, Dr. Kiiza stressed that Uganda still requires more psychiatrists to serve its population of over 46 million. The current ratio stands at about one psychiatrist for every 460,000 people. Experts advocate for a more sustainable ratio, ideally closer to 1:200,000 or even 1:100,000, to adequately address the country’s mental health challenges.
