A devastating fire has ripped through a wooden settlement at Kitosi Landing Site in Mukono District, claiming the lives of two infant twin sisters and razing about 12 homes.
The blaze erupted on Wednesday evening, engulfing the settlement and leaving residents to watch as their homes and belongings were consumed by flames.
According to preliminary reports from the police, the two three-month-old babies were inside a room that had been padlocked from the outside. This prevented any attempts to rescue them when the fire broke out.
Emergency services, including police, arrived at the scene and subsequently recovered the bodies of the young children from the burnt-out structure. Investigations are now underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and the circumstances leading to the children’s deaths.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the incident and stated that authorities are also assessing the full extent of the damage and assisting displaced residents. “We urge parents and guardians to never leave children unattended, especially in situations where they could be trapped during emergencies,” Owoyesigyire advised.
He further appealed to residents living in similar wooden structures to implement fire safety measures, such as keeping flammable materials away from heat sources and ensuring easy access to emergency exits. Police have pledged to continue community outreach programs focused on fire prevention and safety education to mitigate the risk of future tragedies.
