Uganda’s sub-regions are receiving vastly unequal shares of local government funding, according to the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC). The commission’s findings suggest that the current distribution model does not adequately consider factors such as poverty levels, population vulnerability, and the actual cost of providing services in different areas.

This uneven allocation is raising concerns that it could deepen existing socio-economic disparities across the country. The EOC is urging the government to re-evaluate its resource distribution strategies to ensure a more equitable spread of public funds.

The commission emphasizes that the principle of equal opportunities must move beyond policy statements and budget lines to tangible improvements in services and opportunities for all citizens. This includes ensuring that resources are specifically directed towards underserved communities that require greater support.

These concerns arise at a time when various government sectors are calling for increased and sustainable financing to support the nation’s ambitious 10-fold growth strategy. The current resource allocation patterns are seen by the EOC as a potential impediment to achieving this growth in an inclusive manner.

The EOC advocates for a more nuanced approach to resource allocation, one that actively targets and benefits communities facing the greatest disadvantages, thereby fostering more balanced development across all sub-regions.
