Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has underscored the paramount importance of stable and peaceful homes in shaping the character and future of the younger generation.
Speaking at the 13th Women Forum of the National Prayer Breakfast, Tayebwa stated that the family is the foundational institution of society, directly influencing the development of responsible children and citizens. He warned that a breakdown in family structures, characterized by domestic friction and instability, can severely impede a child’s healthy growth.
Tayebwa urged couples to embrace joint accountability in child-rearing and household management, asserting that both parents share responsibility for their children and the family unit. He strongly condemned domestic violence in all its forms, emphasizing that violence is unacceptable regardless of whether the victim is male or female.
“The standard should be the same,” Tayebwa declared. “If violence is wrong when it is committed against a woman, it is also wrong when it is committed against a man. We should not find excuses for violence depending on who the victim is.”
Furthermore, the Deputy Speaker stressed the significance of adults modeling the behaviors they wish to instill in their children, as children learn more from observation than instruction. He highlighted the crucial role women play in providing spiritual and emotional support within families and communities.
Tayebwa concluded by linking national development to the quality of domestic life, noting that the caliber of future leadership and the workforce depends on the children raised today. This message comes amid growing concerns from sociologists and child rights advocates regarding rising domestic disputes and their impact on youth.
