Rev. Fr. Bernard Ochwo, parish priest of St. Martha Namwaya Catholic Church in the Tororo Archdiocese, has cautioned candidates preparing for the upcoming UCE and UACE exams against relying solely on prayer for success.

During a special blessing Mass for over 550 candidates at Petta Community Senior Secondary School, Fr. Ochwo emphasized that while prayer is important, it must be coupled with consistent study. He observed that some students were dedicating more time to overnight prayers and crusades than to revising their course materials, a practice he described as “daydreaming.”

“God helps those who help themselves,” Fr. Ochwo stated, urging students not to expect divine intervention to write their exams for them. He highlighted that faith and hard work are complementary, drawing parallels with Jesus studying scriptures as a youth. He also warned against examination malpractice, suggesting that those who only pray might resort to cheating if they don’t achieve desired results.

The priest encouraged candidates to pursue honest academic achievements, even if it means securing a Division 3. He later blessed their examination materials and appealed to parents to ensure a conducive home environment during the examination period.

School head teacher, Mr. Peter Bayeke, echoed the priest’s sentiments, acknowledging that some students had become complacent. He urged candidates to remain disciplined, seek help from teachers, and consult their books.

UCE examinations are set to begin on October 12, with UACE exams commencing on November 7.
