Parents Arrested Following Infant's Tragic Death in Wakiso

Authorities in Kajansi are investigating the death of a nine-month-old baby, Jeremiah Mugisha Anakeleti, whose parents have been taken into custody. The mother, Irene Nakalanzi, 19, and the father, Joseph Segimana, 37, are being held by police in Kigo-Lunya.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Recheal Kawala, preliminary findings suggest the tragic incident on October 4, 2026, stemmed from a domestic dispute. It is alleged that Segimana had left the family home to live with another woman. On the day of the incident, Segimana reportedly removed his belongings from the family residence, telling Nakalanzi he was in Kampala. However, police claim he returned to the home while Nakalanzi was out and moved his possessions to his new dwelling.

Detectives are investigating allegations that an enraged Nakalanzi subsequently threw the baby into a nearby pit latrine. She reportedly initially told authorities that the child’s father had taken the baby and disappeared.

On October 7, local leaders brought Nakalanzi to the police to report her child missing. During questioning, she allegedly confessed to disposing of the baby in the pit latrine on October 4. Police, with the assistance of the Fire Brigade, recovered the infant’s body from the latrine on October 8 and it has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Both suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue. Ms. Kawala emphasized the importance of resolving domestic disputes peacefully and condemned the violence. This incident follows another case in Kawempe where parents were arrested in connection with the death of their five-month-old infant, who was also found in a pit latrine.
