The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is embarking on a significant shift in its investment strategy, with plans to allocate a larger portion of Uganda’s worker savings into infrastructure projects and private equity. This move signals a departure from its historically conservative investment approach, which primarily focused on fixed income and publicly traded equities.

The decision comes as NSSF grapples with managing its rapidly expanding asset base, which has surpassed Shs18 trillion. By investing in infrastructure, NSSF aims to tap into long-term, stable returns, while also contributing to the development of crucial national projects. This could include roads, energy, and other vital public amenities that often require substantial capital.

Furthermore, the fund is eyeing private equity as a means to achieve higher yields. Private equity investments involve stakes in private companies, offering the potential for significant growth and returns that are often not available in public markets. This diversification is expected to help NSSF achieve its mandate of providing sustainable retirement benefits to its members.

NSSF officials have indicated that this strategic reorientation is crucial for adapting to the evolving financial landscape and for maximizing the value of member contributions. The fund is reportedly conducting thorough due diligence to identify suitable opportunities within these new asset classes, ensuring that investments align with its risk appetite and long-term objectives.

The shift also reflects a growing trend among pension funds globally to explore alternative investments for enhanced diversification and return potential, especially in an environment of fluctuating public market performance.
