The legal battle for the Mawokota North parliamentary seat is heading to a conclusion, with the High Court in Mpigi setting November 13, 2026, as the date for its ruling. The decision stems from an election petition filed by Hillary Innocent Kiyaga of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who is challenging the January 2026 election victory of Amelia Anne Kyambadde.

Kiyaga alleges that the election was marred by significant irregularities, primarily focusing on alleged alterations to Declaration of Results (DR) forms. During court proceedings, Kiyaga’s legal team presented evidence suggesting discrepancies in both figures and words on several DR forms from polling stations including Ssali Compound Kolokolo and Tirobogo Primary School. These alleged changes, if proven, could have impacted the final vote count.

In response to the petition, the court heard testimony from several witnesses. Mr. Evarist Twinomujuni, the Mpigi District Returning Officer in 2026, acknowledged that corrections were made on some DR forms. However, he maintained these were administrative rectifications of clerical errors by presiding officers, not attempts to manipulate results. He also defended the inclusion of DR forms where candidate agents did not sign, stating that such omissions do not automatically invalidate a form if it is certified by the presiding officer.

With the examination of oral evidence now complete, all parties have been directed to submit their final written arguments. Kiyaga’s team has until October 14 to file their submissions, followed by responses from Kyambadde and the Electoral Commission by October 26. Kiyaga will then have an opportunity to file a rejoinder before the judge delivers the final verdict on November 13.
