Singer John Blaq has shed light on a significant hurdle facing Ugandan musicians aiming for international recognition: a lack of financial muscle.

According to Blaq, many local artists successfully collaborate with international stars but falter when it comes to promoting the resulting music. He explained that these projects often fail to gain momentum outside of Uganda due to insufficient marketing budgets.

“International stars have a huge budget but are not willing to push the collaborations without effort from local stars. We are broke, local artistes are broke to push the collaborations, so they suffer natural deaths,” Blaq stated in a recent interview.

He emphasized that while such collaborations hold immense potential to elevate Ugandan artists, their success hinges on joint investment in promotion and marketing. Without adequate resources dedicated to reaching wider audiences, even promising musical partnerships risk fading into obscurity.

Blaq’s comments underscore the need for a more robust financial ecosystem within the local music industry to capitalize on opportunities for global reach.
