The High Court in Hoima is set to announce its decision on November 13, 2026, concerning an election petition that questions the victory of Asinansi Nyakato, who represents the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) as the Hoima City Woman MP.
The petition was formally filed by Princess Diana Jane Mugenyi, the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) candidate, who aims to have Nyakato’s election invalidated due to alleged electoral malpractices.
In the January 15, 2026 election, Nyakato secured victory with 17,142 votes, surpassing Mugenyi’s 15,197 votes by a margin of 1,945.
The court proceedings, overseen by Justice Charles Kasibayo, commenced on October 1 and concluded on October 8, with both parties presenting their cases and cross-examining witnesses. Key individuals who testified included Mugenyi, Nyakato, and Obra Atamba, the Returning Officer for Hoima City.
Following the evidence presentation, Justice Kasibayo instructed Mugenyi’s legal team to submit their final arguments by October 19, serving the respondents concurrently. The respondents are then required to file their responses by October 28, with any final rejoinders due from both sides by November 2.
Both candidates and their legal teams have expressed confidence in their respective cases. Mugenyi’s lawyer, Hamphrey Tumwesigye, believes the proceedings were favorable, while Nyakato’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Ssegona, remains assured that the evidence presented is insufficient to overturn his client’s win.
Mugenyi’s petition details allegations of ballot stuffing, voter bribery, and result manipulation, seeking a nullification of the current election and a rerun. Nyakato, however, has urged her supporters to remain calm, asserting the legitimacy of her electoral victory.
This legal challenge brings a close to a significant electoral contest in Hoima City, with the court’s final decision eagerly awaited by all parties involved.
