The race to succeed António Guterres as the next United Nations Secretary-General appears to have a frontrunner, with sources suggesting that Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica is currently in the lead. If successful, Grynspan would make history as the first woman to hold the top position in the UN’s more than 80-year existence.

The selection process for the UN’s chief diplomat is a complex one, involving nominations from member states and a review by the Security Council. While informal soundings and assessments are underway, the official process is expected to intensify.

As a former associate administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and a current Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Grynspan brings a wealth of experience in international development and diplomacy. Her background also includes significant roles in government within Costa Rica, where she served as vice president.

The push for a female Secretary-General has been a growing movement among many UN member states and civil society organizations, highlighting the need for greater gender parity at the highest levels of global governance. Grynspan’s potential candidacy represents a significant opportunity to address this long-standing imbalance.

While Grynspan is seen as a strong contender, other candidates are also vying for the position. The final decision will be made by the UN General Assembly upon recommendation from the Security Council, a process that often involves intense diplomatic negotiations and considerations of geographical and gender balance.
