A violent hailstorm coupled with strong winds struck Buvuma District on Wednesday evening, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the lives of three fishermen. The tragedy occurred around 7:30 pm in Lufu Village, Nairambi Sub-county, catching residents unaware.

Hassan Batala, 30, Denis Muwolya, 28, and Bakali Mugoda, 22, were fishing on Lake Victoria when their vessel was capsized by the sudden tempest. While Mr. Muwolya’s body was recovered on Thursday morning, search efforts for the other two continue. The incident has left the fishing community in mourning and despair.

On land, the storm’s impact was equally severe. Lufu Primary School suffered significant damage, with the roof of a main classroom block being ripped off, disrupting the learning environment for students. The deputy headteacher, Mr. Stephen Ojambo, expressed deep concern over the setback and appealed for swift intervention from educational authorities.

In Lufu Village itself, over 50 households were devastated. Homes were flattened, and household goods were swept away, leaving many residents displaced. The local leadership has established a temporary camp for the most affected families as they await assistance from the central government. The damage also extended to neighboring Kiwangala Village, affecting homes and plantations.

Local leaders and councilors are urgently appealing to the central government, the Office of the Prime Minister, and NGOs for emergency humanitarian assistance. Needs include shelter materials, food, bedding, and clean water to support the affected families as they begin the arduous process of rebuilding their lives.
