A businessman identified as Ssenyange Mugaga, also known as Reference, appeared before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court facing a charge of assaulting a police officer. The incident allegedly occurred on October 2, 2026, at Kajja Market in Kampala.
Mugaga pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stems from an alleged altercation with Police Constable Gerald Isabirye. According to the prosecution, PC Isabirye was on duty when the incident took place.
The court heard that PC Isabirye was in the Kajja business area attempting to buy water when he noticed Mugaga engaging with women. The officer approached Mugaga to inquire about his identification and purpose in the area. It is alleged that Mugaga reacted angrily, telling the officer he was new to the police station and had no right to question him.
PC Isabirye reported the encounter to his superior, who instructed him to bring Mugaga in for questioning. When the officer returned with backup to apprehend Mugaga, it is alleged that the businessman resisted arrest, leading to a physical struggle. PC Isabirye claims he was pushed and beaten, and his uniform was torn during the altercation.
Investigations into the matter are reportedly ongoing, and the prosecution requested more time to complete their inquiries. Principal Magistrate Jalia Basajjabalaba remanded Mugaga until October 20, when he is scheduled to return to court for further proceedings.
