Bobi Wine's Bodyguards Granted Bail in Masaka Case, Two Remain Detained

Four bodyguards of Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine have been granted Shs5 million cash bail each by the Masaka High Court in connection with an aggravated robbery case. However, two of them, Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi, will not be released immediately due to a separate pending case. Four close security personnel for National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine have been granted bail by the Masaka High Court. The group, including prominent members Edward Ssebuufu (Eddie Mutwe) and Achileo Kivumbi, along with Gadafi Mugumya and Grace Wakabi, each posted Shs5 million in cash bail. Their sureties were also required to provide non-cash bonds valued at Shs50 million.

Despite this development, a portion of Bobi Wine’s security detail will remain in custody. NUP lawyer Samuel Muyizzi stated that Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi cannot be released yet because they are involved in a separate ongoing case. This previous case stems from a bail denial at the Kanyanya Magistrates Court, and their legal team is pursuing a review of that decision.

Muyizzi expressed optimism that the recent bail grant in Masaka might positively influence the outcome of the pending application in Kampala. The charges in the Masaka case relate to an alleged incident in May 2024 during a burial in the Lwengo District, where the accused face counts of aggravated robbery, malicious damage to property, and assault. The defendants have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

While Mugumya and Wakabi are expected to be released upon meeting the bail conditions, the legal team is continuing its efforts to secure the release of Mutwe and Kivumbi in their separate legal battle. The situation highlights the complex legal challenges faced by Bobi Wine’s close associates.
