Ambassador Abbey Walusimbi, Senior Presidential Advisor on Diaspora Affairs, has called upon Ugandans living abroad to view their diverse cultural backgrounds as a unifying force rather than a source of division. Speaking at the 33rd coronation anniversary celebration of the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, in Los Angeles, Ambassador Walusimbi emphasized that cultural differences should enrich Uganda’s national identity.
The event, organized by Buganda Kingdom representatives in the United States, brought together members of the Baganda community and the broader Ugandan diaspora. It served as a platform to foster cultural ties and encourage diaspora engagement with Uganda.
Ambassador Walusimbi, representing President Yoweri Museveni, urged Ugandans in the diaspora to invest their skills, knowledge, and resources back home. He highlighted opportunities in sectors such as education, health, agriculture, technology, and infrastructure. “Come home. Bring your skills, knowledge, technology, and investment. Uganda needs your brain gain and your partnership in building a stronger nation,” he stated.
He further stressed the importance of unity, stating, “Our different cultural traditions should not divide us; rather, they should enrich our common Ugandan identity.” The gathering also saw the launch of “Amatikkira Magazine,” a publication dedicated to Buganda’s history, culture, traditions, and contemporary issues.
Community leaders present acknowledged the role of cultural institutions in preserving heritage and promoting values like education and respect. The event underscored the potential for cultural celebrations to bridge gaps and facilitate interaction among Ugandans from various backgrounds, promoting a cohesive national vision.
