Uganda is set to commemorate its 64th Independence Day on Friday, October 9th, with a significantly scaled-down ceremony at State House, Entebbe. President Yoweri Museveni will preside over the event, which will largely be broadcast virtually.
Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, announced that the physical attendance will be restricted to approximately 30 VVIPs and a small number of religious leaders. The rest of the nation is expected to tune in through television, radio, and other national broadcasting platforms.
The celebrations will be held under the theme, “Embracing our Sovereignty with Hope and Visionary Leadership.” This theme aims to honor the individuals who fought for Uganda’s independence while prompting reflection on the nation’s journey and its future leadership needs.
This adjusted format follows a Cabinet decision in March 2026 to temporarily suspend celebrations of National and International Days, redirecting allocated funds to other government priorities. However, Independence Day will proceed as it is a gazetted public holiday, with State House covering this year’s expenses.
This departure from traditional large-scale parades and gatherings marks a shift from previous years. For instance, the 63rd Independence Day in 2025 was celebrated at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
During the ceremony, President Museveni is slated to confer National Honours and Awards on 20 Ugandans. Robust security measures are in place, with the Special Forces Command securing State House and the Uganda Police Force, supported by military and intelligence agencies, managing broader security and traffic.
Preparations have included national thanksgiving prayers across various faith communities and extensive public mobilization efforts through media and local government officials. The Minister also provided historical context, highlighting the struggles and sacrifices of various leaders and movements that led to Uganda’s self-rule in 1962.
“Independence Day Anniversary is therefore not merely ceremonial. It is a moment for national reflection, an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of our forebearers and to celebrate the achievements of our sovereign Republic,” Babalanda stated, urging citizens to participate with patriotism and pride.
