The Ugandan government is stepping up its efforts to address the significant challenge of youth unemployment with a new set of initiatives. Officials announced plans to expand graduate internship programs across ministries and local governments, aiming to absorb approximately 3,000 graduates and provide a potential pathway into permanent public service employment.
In addition to internships, the government is rolling out an online recruitment system. This aims to bring greater transparency to the hiring process within ministries, departments, agencies, and local governments, reducing potential for bias and making job applications more accessible. Young people are being encouraged to develop digital skills to compete effectively in this new system.
Recognizing the need for practical skills, the government is also bolstering its support for youth entrepreneurship and skills development programs. These initiatives are specifically designed to assist young people who are not currently in education, employment, or training. However, challenges such as teenage pregnancy, early marriage, and the unequal burden of care responsibilities continue to hinder young women’s transition into the workforce.
Officials also highlighted a critical mismatch between the skills provided by educational institutions and the demands of the job market. To address this, there’s a push to improve the quality and relevance of vocational training, ensuring it aligns with industry needs. Furthermore, the government is considering measures to support young entrepreneurs, including temporary tax relief for new businesses.
Despite these efforts, wage constraints remain a significant hurdle, particularly for local governments struggling to fill vacant positions due to limited funding. The government is seeking increased allocation from the Ministry of Finance to address these gaps, especially in critical sectors like health and education, where staffing shortages are prevalent.
This comprehensive strategy underscores the government’s commitment to creating a more supportive environment for young Ugandans seeking meaningful employment and economic opportunities.
