Uganda has officially cautioned its citizens against any involvement in Kenya’s political landscape, particularly concerning the upcoming 2027 General Election. The warning comes in response to growing accusations that some Ugandan nationals are being improperly facilitated to acquire Kenyan identity documents and register as voters, predominantly in border regions.
First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga emphasized Uganda’s commitment to respecting Kenya’s sovereignty and stated that the Ugandan government has no role in or intention to interfere with Kenya’s electoral processes. She clarified that any Ugandan individuals found participating in Kenyan politics outside the legal framework would be acting independently and not on behalf of the Ugandan government.
These remarks follow a recent investigation by Kenyan media, which reported on alleged vulnerabilities in identification and voter registration systems along the Kenya-Uganda border. The report suggested that some Ugandan nationals had managed to obtain Kenyan identity and voter cards in anticipation of the 2027 polls, sparking political debate within Kenya.
While Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has denied receiving credible evidence of illegal foreigner registration, Uganda has pledged to cooperate with Kenyan authorities to investigate the claims. Kadaga has directed Ugandan security agencies, especially in border districts, to monitor the situation closely and prevent citizens from crossing into Kenya for political activities.
However, Kadaga stressed that these measures should not impede legitimate cross-border movement for trade, employment, or family reasons, highlighting the strong social and economic ties between the two nations. Uganda aims to address any concerns through diplomatic and security channels, maintaining the principle of non-interference in each other’s electoral affairs.
