Residents of Walukuba, Jinja City, were met with a grim discovery on Wednesday morning as the body of Justine Bosco Okello, a 32-year-old security guard, was found by the roadside on Kimeze Road.
Initial observations by locals indicated that Okello had sustained cuts to his head and neck, though the exact cause of these injuries remained unconfirmed by authorities at the time of reporting. The area, known for several unfinished buildings, has been cited by residents as a potential hiding spot for criminal elements.
Concerns about safety in the vicinity have been mounting, with reports of women being harassed along the road by suspected criminals. A friend of the deceased, Simon Ojera Patrick, expressed his shock, stating he had last seen Okello at a drinking establishment on Sunday night.
Charles Busulwa, the LC1 chairman of Church Cell, provided background on Okello’s employment history, mentioning he previously worked for Industrial Security Services (ISS) in Jinja before a transfer to Kampala. He had reportedly left the company in August and recently returned to Jinja.
However, Kiira Region police spokesperson James Mubi suggested a more complex scenario. Preliminary police findings indicated that Okello might have been a leader within a group allegedly involved in criminal activities in the Walukuba and Mpumudde areas, including bag snatching.
Police have launched a full investigation into the injuries sustained by Okello and the overall circumstances of his death. Mubi urged the public to refrain from vigilantism and instead report any suspected criminal activity to the police for proper legal action.
This incident has raised significant questions about the security of the area and the potential involvement of those meant to ensure safety in local crime. The investigation is ongoing, seeking to uncover the truth behind Okello’s untimely demise and any connections to criminal networks.
