Authorities in Iganga have launched a probe into alleged forgery and fraudulent activities at the Lubega Institute of Nursing and Health Professionals. The investigation centers on suspicions that around 90 students submitted falsified Stanbic Bank deposit slips to the institution.
Busoga East Police spokesperson, ASP Michael Kasadha, confirmed that the institute’s management reported the incident after noticing discrepancies with payment submissions. “It was alleged that students were presenting fake Stanbic Bank deposit slips purportedly issued in the name of one Joshua Mwesigwa, who falsely claimed to be a bank agent,” Kasadha stated.
Police have since opened a formal investigation, with three student suspects already brought before the courts. The alleged mastermind, Joshua Mwesigwa, who is accused of posing as a bank agent, was apprehended after being on the run for two months and is currently held at Iganga Central Police Station facing charges of forgery, uttering forged documents, and impersonation.
Statements have been collected from the institute’s administration, parents, and some students. Recovered bank slips are undergoing forensic analysis. A stakeholder meeting involving school officials, parents, and police was also convened to gather facts.
The investigation comes amidst claims made in Parliament by Bubulo East MP John Musila, who alleged the institution was demanding double payments from parents. The institute, however, has refuted these claims, identifying Musila as the father of a student implicated in the forgery scheme. They stated that the MP’s daughter was among the approximately 90 students suspected of involvement.
The institute asserted that they invited parents to discuss the matter, and that Musila sent his wife to the meeting. They expressed surprise at his parliamentary allegations. Police are urging all parties to allow the investigation to conclude without interference.
This matter is under active criminal investigation by the police.
