The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has publicly cautioned its members and supporters against leveraging the organization’s name for any illegal activities, including intimidation, threats, or harassment. Henry Basaliza, the PLU’s Deputy Director of Mobilisation, stressed that affiliation with the group does not grant immunity from legal consequences.
Basaliza articulated that PLU champions patriotism, discipline, unity, integrity, service, and respect for the rule of law, explicitly stating that “PLU does not stand for lawlessness.” He affirmed that any individual committing an offense while purporting to act on behalf of PLU will be subject to investigation and legal action by the relevant authorities.
These directives come as PLU actively expands its nationwide signature collection, online registration, and endorsement drive. Basaliza noted the significant participation from diverse segments of Ugandan society in this exercise. To bolster these efforts, PLU has launched a mobilization caravan intended to traverse various districts and communities, supporting the ongoing registration and endorsement processes.
PLU leadership has urged its local mobilization teams to diligently manage and return endorsement materials to the secretariat. The organization aims for a broad, transparent, and inclusive exercise, ensuring all Ugandans have the opportunity to participate. PLU coordinators and volunteers are called upon to conduct their activities with peace and respect, reflecting the organization’s core values.
Further mobilization activities, including rallies and community barazas in locations such as Tororo, Jumani, Ntungamo, Mbale City, and Kikuube, are planned. Basaliza also reaffirmed PLU’s cooperative relationship with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), emphasizing that national interests supersede individual or organizational agendas.
