The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has issued a strong denial regarding reports that they are involved in talks with General Salim Saleh aimed at securing the release of their leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye.

These reports emerged following a publication suggesting that Gen. Saleh was spearheading behind-the-scenes efforts involving various political figures, religious leaders, and elders to facilitate Besigye’s freedom. The initiative was reportedly to involve a committee of eminent persons and an opposition team engaging with Saleh’s group.

However, the PFF asserts that it has not authorized any such negotiations. Harold Kaija, the party’s deputy chief of cabinet for policy and communication, stated that no senior PFF official has been able to visit Dr. Besigye since he collapsed during a court appearance on July 29, 2026. Kaija emphasized that the party cannot negotiate on Besigye’s behalf without his direct instruction.

The PFF also noted that Dr. Besigye has applied for bail four times, with all applications being rejected. The party remains committed to pursuing all available legal avenues for his release and rejects any suggestions that Besigye or his supporters should apologize or plead for his freedom, arguing that the evidence against him is insufficient.

This denial contrasts with earlier comments from Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who had indicated that Gen. Saleh was authorized by President Museveni to handle Besigye’s matter. Dr. Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, has also stated that her husband has not entered into negotiations or a plea bargain and maintains his innocence, calling for his immediate release on bail for health reasons.

Dr. Besigye has been in custody since November 2024, facing treason charges, which he denies. The PFF’s statement raises questions about the extent of Besigye’s or the party’s involvement in the alleged mediation efforts.
