As Uganda prepares to mark its 64th Independence Day, the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) is urging for political tolerance and a unified national spirit. Speaking to journalists, ONC National Coordinator Ms Hadijah Namyalo emphasized that political differences should not overshadow the country’s significant achievements.
Ms Namyalo appealed to all political actors to set aside rivalries and focus on safeguarding the nation’s developmental progress, including its emerging oil sector. She highlighted Uganda’s tumultuous post-independence history, noting the decades of instability until the NRM government restored peace and initiated socio-economic growth.
“We may disagree politically, but we must not forget where Uganda came from. Let’s not rape the country, leaving Ugandans bleeding in fear. We have gains to protect,” Ms Namyalo stated, underscoring the importance of national stability as the foundation for economic prosperity.
Her call for restraint echoes sentiments from other NRM figures. Minister for Water and Environment, Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, recently cautioned against aggressive crackdowns on opposition, suggesting that diplomacy and magnanimity are signs of true political strength. He argued that constructive criticism from opponents serves as a vital tool for self-assessment.
These appeals for unity come amid heightened political tensions, with opposition groups raising concerns about alleged human rights abuses, including enforced disappearances and detentions. The recent circulation of a video showing missing former mobiliser Sam Mugumya sparked public outrage and condemnation.
Ms Namyalo reiterated that the ONC’s focus remains on socio-economic transformation rather than divisive politicking. She urged citizens to approach the upcoming Independence Day with sober reflection, prioritizing national stability as the bedrock for continued growth and shared prosperity.
