President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni received Commonwealth Secretary-General Ms. Shirley Botchwey at State House Entebbe, welcoming her warmly to Uganda and referring to her as “our daughter.”
During their discussions, President Museveni advocated for enhanced unity and integration within Africa, particularly through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He stressed that Africa’s partnerships should be driven by the continent’s broader interests rather than historical colonial ties, emphasizing that external relationships should not compromise Africa’s development agenda.
The President also expressed strong support for a proposed Commonwealth climate fund aimed at fostering alternative energy sources like solar, hydro, and nuclear power. Furthermore, he endorsed the idea of a youth aspiration fund to equip Africa’s young population with essential skills for socio-economic transformation.
Ms. Botchwey commended President Museveni’s vision for Africa’s self-reliance and acknowledged Africa’s pivotal role within the Commonwealth. She highlighted the organization’s commitment to addressing African challenges and promoting greater self-sufficiency on the continent, including efforts to bolster the AfCFTA.
The meeting covered key areas such as Africa’s integration, Uganda’s collaboration with the Commonwealth, trade and investment, climate action, renewable energy solutions, and initiatives for youth skilling and empowerment. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Adonia Ayebare, also attended the session.
