The Makerere University community, along with athletes from across the nation, recently participated in the highly anticipated annual Makerere Marathon. The event, more than just a competition, served as a platform to promote health and wellness, unite the university and its surrounding communities, and raise funds for various outreach programs.
This year’s 42km men’s race was dominated by Oscar Kibet, who crossed the finish line first, showcasing remarkable endurance and skill. In the equally competitive half-marathon (21km), James Kirwa emerged as the victor, demonstrating impressive speed and stamina.
Beyond the elite performances, the marathon welcomed participants of all ages and abilities, from seasoned runners to enthusiastic beginners. This inclusive approach underscores the event’s commitment to making sports accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with cheers from spectators and a shared sense of accomplishment among all who took part.
Organizers highlighted the dual purpose of the marathon: to celebrate athletic prowess and to make a tangible difference in the community. Funds raised through registrations and sponsorships are earmarked for projects aimed at improving local infrastructure and supporting educational initiatives within the Makerere area. The success of this year’s event promises continued positive impact in the years to come.
