KIU Implements Strict Dress Code, Banning Miniskirts and Crocs

Kampala International University (KIU) has begun enforcing a stringent dress code, marking a significant shift in campus attire regulations. The new policy, effective from October 7th, explicitly bans items such as miniskirts, dresses above the knee, torn clothing, and sagging trousers.

In addition to clothing, the university has also targeted specific types of footwear, prohibiting what it terms “inappropriate footwear” including bathroom slippers, Crocs, and casual plastic beach footwear. This move aims to promote a more modest, neat, and professional appearance among students and staff.

Security officers on campus have been granted the authority to deny entry to any individual not adhering to the new dress code. Initial enforcement saw students deemed improperly dressed being stopped and cautioned. Repeat offenders will face disciplinary action through their respective committees.

The university’s decision is expected to reignite discussions surrounding the extent to which educational institutions should regulate the attire of adult students. While some Ugandan universities adopt varying approaches, often influenced by professional or religious mandates, KIU’s directive appears comprehensive.

This development contrasts with institutions like Makerere University, which has historically taken a more lenient stance, relying on general conduct rules rather than a specific dress code. The new policy at KIU underscores a clear commitment to enforcing particular standards of appearance across its campus community.
