Christopher Saunders, a former Australian bishop, has been handed a prison sentence of six and a half years for the sexual abuse of two young Aboriginal men. The 76-year-old was convicted in August of one charge of rape and twelve counts of indecent assault, stemming from incidents that occurred between 2010 and 2019.

Saunders, who resigned as Bishop of Broome in 2020 following the initial accusations, reportedly groomed the victims, offering them alcohol and using church resources for “shirts-off” gatherings. His trial in Western Australia detailed how he committed the offenses, including forcing oral sex on one victim.

A victim impact statement described the profound distress caused by the abuse, with one victim stating, “I was a toy that he was using.” Saunders was acquitted of charges involving a third accuser.

District Court Judge Martin Flynn noted that Saunders had “disregarded the dignity” of his victims, inflicting lasting harm. The Archbishop of Perth, Timothy Costelloe, expressed sorrow for the victims and acknowledged the betrayal of trust by a church leader, stating that no sentence could undo the suffering.

Following initial investigations that were closed without charge in 2020, a new investigation was launched after a papal inquiry. The church is awaiting a decision from Rome regarding the stripping of Saunders’ remaining titles and ministry powers. He is considered one of the most senior Catholic leaders globally to face such charges.
