Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has highlighted the critical issue of corruption within Uganda’s private sector, urging for more robust measures to combat it.
Speaking at the first Uganda National Prayer Breakfast Business Forum 2026, under the theme “Wake Up, Work Hard and Build Uganda,” Tayebwa pointed out that the nation’s anti-corruption efforts have predominantly focused on public institutions.
He stated that this narrow approach has allowed corruption in the private sector to proliferate, significantly impacting businesses and impeding their potential for growth. Tayebwa stressed that this vice must be addressed promptly.
“We have been focusing so much on fighting corruption in the public sector and forgetting that corruption in the private sector is also on the rise and is crippling the sector. It must be urgently checked if the private sector is to grow,” he remarked.
Tayebwa called upon the bodies responsible for fighting corruption to broaden their scope beyond just public servants and government agencies. He believes a comprehensive approach is necessary to eradicate corruption from the country.
Furthermore, he implored the business community to conduct their operations with transparency and fulfill their tax obligations, reminding them that government revenue, derived from taxes, is essential for providing public services.
During the forum, Emmanuel Katongole, Executive Chairman of Quality Chemicals and Industries Uganda Limited, urged Ugandan business professionals to embrace discipline in their work, saving, and investment strategies. He also encouraged accountability, networking, and the development of institutions capable of generating lasting value.
The event served as a platform for business leaders and stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for fostering ethical business conduct, encouraging investment, and driving economic progress in Uganda.
