The High Court in Rukungiri District has initiated the hearing of an election petition lodged by Ingrid Kamateneti, a candidate from the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
Kamateneti is contesting the victory of Gen. Henry Tumukunde, who was declared the winner of the Rukungiri Municipality parliamentary seat. She is asking the court to nullify the election results, asserting that the declaration made by the Electoral Commission does not accurately reflect a valid electoral process.
The petition also names the Electoral Commission as a respondent due to its role in declaring Gen. Tumukunde, who ran on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket, as the elected Member of Parliament.
During the initial court session on Wednesday, both parties presented preliminary objections, raising legal and procedural arguments that the court must first address before delving into the core issues of the petition.
Justice Richard Wejuli Wabwire, presiding over the case, has scheduled the next hearing for Thursday, October 8, 2026. On this date, the court is expected to commence the cross-examination of witnesses from both the petitioner and the respondent’s sides.
The outcome of this petition could determine whether the court finds grounds to overturn the Electoral Commission’s declaration of Gen. Tumukunde as the Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality.
