Cinderella Sanyu, widely recognized as Cindy, has called for a strategic shift within Uganda’s film industry, advocating for the development of stronger personal brands for actors and other practitioners. Cindy, who has recently transitioned into filmmaking inspired by her husband, Prynce Okuyo, believes this focus is crucial for the sector’s growth.
She observed that while audiences often recall specific films, they frequently struggle to connect with the individuals who bring these stories to life. “We need to create personalities because in the film industry, we mainly know the movies which come and go. We don’t know the individuals who feature in them,” Cindy stated during a recent television discussion.
Drawing from her extensive experience in the music industry, Cindy highlighted how artistes have successfully cultivated personal brands that resonate with fans, often generating anticipation for new releases. She suggests that filmmakers can adopt a similar approach.
“I think in movies we have a task of creating names and brands so that people get to know them because sometimes people fall in love with individual characters in film and not the whole project,” she explained. Cindy concluded that by promoting individual talents and creating memorable personalities, the film industry can achieve greater recognition and elevation, mirroring the successful strategies employed in music.
