Tragedy has struck Lake Bunyonyi as the body of Samuel Amanya, a 22-year-old Senior Four student, was recovered on Wednesday morning. Amanya had drowned three days prior while attempting to swim across the lake.
Amanya, a candidate at Lake Bunyonyi Senior Secondary School, which is located on Bwama Island, reportedly drowned on Saturday, October 3rd. He had traveled to Itambira Island by canoe but found it missing upon his return. In an attempt to reach Bwama Island by swimming, he tragically lost his life.
Marine Police and local residents initiated a search for Amanya immediately after his disappearance. Despite their efforts, his body was only spotted floating on the lake around 7:30 am on Wednesday by Simon Byamukama of Paradise Eco-Hub Foundation and Silas Nomwesigwa.
Byamukama and Nomwesigwa retrieved Amanya’s body and transported it to his family home in Katooma village for burial. This incident marks the second drowning involving a student from Lake Bunyonyi Senior Secondary School in recent times.
Last year, in August 2023, a Senior Two student, Martin Izabayo, drowned while attempting to escape from the school premises. Izabayo and a friend were on the lake in a canoe without life jackets when it capsized, leading to Izabayo’s death. His friend was rescued by local divers.
