The Ugandan Shilling has recently experienced a notable depreciation, weakening by nearly 6 percent against the US Dollar. This has sparked concerns regarding potential inflationary pressures on the Ugandan economy. In response to these anxieties, the Bank of Uganda (BoU) has issued a statement urging the public and businesses not to panic.

The central bank emphasized that the value of the Shilling is determined by market forces, specifically the interplay of supply and demand. This is a standard characteristic of a market-determined currency, and fluctuations are expected.

Officials at the Bank of Uganda are reportedly working diligently to address the current situation and contain the depreciation, which has seen the Shilling approach the Shs4,000 mark against the US Dollar, the primary currency for trade transactions in the country. While headline inflation has remained within the BoU’s target of 5 percent, underlying pressures from rising food and fuel prices, coupled with the weaker Shilling and external factors, present emerging risks.

Foreign exchange dealers have pointed to businesses accelerating their dollar purchases as one factor contributing to the Shilling’s recent weakness. The Shilling had previously enjoyed a period of relative stability before this renewed pressure began to mount. The Bank of Uganda remains committed to maintaining currency stability and managing economic conditions.
