The recent 90th-anniversary celebrations of the East African Revival Movement, also known as ‘abalokole’, in the Ankole region, have brought to light both significant achievements and pressing concerns. While the movement has historically been a force for transformation, the current generation appears to have strayed from its core tenets.

The region’s negative statistics are a stark indicator that the spiritual and ethical fire of the revival may have dimmed. This disconnect raises critical questions about the sustainability of development gains achieved in the area. President Museveni’s call to “protecting the gains” underscores the urgency for policymakers, investors, and citizens to solidify and institutionalize development milestones for long-term impact.

The revival movement itself, which broke down tribal and cultural barriers within the church, offered a powerful model for unity and progress. However, its legacy is now being questioned for its potential to either drive transformation or contribute to stagnation if not actively engaged with contemporary realities.

To truly protect the gains of the past and ensure a prosperous future, there is a clear need to reignite the spirit of the East African Revival. This involves not just remembering its history but actively embodying its principles of integrity, unity, and dedication to community well-being. Without this renewed focus, the region risks repeating cycles of underdevelopment, regardless of celebratory milestones.
